Japan's four biggest beer makers raided over price-fixing allegations

James Harrington Senior Risk Analyst ·1 sources

Japan's Fair Trade Commission raided the premises of Asahi, Sapporo, Kirin and Suntory Spirits on Wednesday, searching for evidence that the country's four dominant beer producers coordinated price increases in violation of the Antimonopoly Act.

The investigation centres on price rises the companies announced in April 2025 and October 2022, which they attributed at the time to higher raw material, energy and transportation costs. Kirin Holdings confirmed its subsidiary Kirin Brewery Company was searched "on suspicion of a violation of the Antimonopoly Act." Asahi and Sapporo also confirmed searches. Suntory described "an on-site inspection in connection with a potential violation of Japan's Antimonopoly Act relating to domestic alcohol trade practices."

Shares in Asahi, Kirin and Sapporo fell after the news broke. Suntory's beer operations are privately held. JFTC Secretary General Iwanari Hiroo declined to detail the investigation while it remains at a preliminary stage.

The action follows a separate JFTC cartel inquiry launched in June targeting Japanese ice cream manufacturers including Meiji and Ezaki Glico, suggesting a broader regulatory push against coordinated pricing across the consumer goods sector.
