The moment after the balance
A wallet balance is an invitation to believe that money is available. A redemption request asks the system to prove it. That is where the identity of the issuer, the quality of the reserve and the customer's access conditions meet.
The Financial Stability Board's recommendations emphasise robust legal claims and timely redemption at par for single-currency stablecoins. These are policy expectations, not an OUSD-specific guarantee. They offer a useful set of questions for this asset. 1
Who can redeem directly? What documentation is required? How are requests processed outside ordinary bank hours? What happens if a distributor fails while the issuer continues operating? Those questions deserve answers before a customer confuses a target price with an unconditional cash exit.
Assets and arrival times
A reserve can have enough assets by valuation while an operation still faces a timing problem. The assets must be available through functioning custodians and payment routes when obligations fall due. Solvency and immediate liquidity are related but different tests.
Consider a hypothetical surge in redemptions on a day when an important service is unavailable. The task is not merely to show that assets exist; it is to turn the appropriate assets into spendable funds and deliver them under the applicable terms. This scenario illustrates a risk mechanism, not an OUSD event.
A useful reserve review would inspect composition, maturities, custodians, segregation, independent assurance and the reconciliation to tokens outstanding. I found Bridge's public reserve portal, but its dynamic OUSD data was not independently reconciled in this review. I will not fill that gap with the reserve structure of a competitor. 2
An exit for the actual customer
Open Standard's integration guidance makes provider-specific terms and eligibility relevant to access. A holder's practical exit can therefore depend on the service through which it entered, even when the ecosystem describes parity at the minting layer. 3
A business pilot should test a real redemption, not just a transfer between wallets. It should document net proceeds, completion time, support escalation and the records used to reconcile the exit. Testing should also include an unsuccessful request and an alternative supported route.
The most reassuring reserve headline is still incomplete without a workable exit. For me, the product is the whole promise: identify the asset, understand the claim, and recover usable money through a route the customer can actually access.
