FanDuel has voided the sports bets placed by Bill Simmons, founder of The Ringer and head of talk at Spotify, after Simmons acknowledged on his podcast that he used his daughter's boyfriend to place wagers in Massachusetts while he was in California, where online sports betting is not legal.
Simmons made the admission during a conversation on his podcast Tuesday. "I talked about how I got my daughter's boyfriend to place some bets for me in Massachusetts because I was in L.A. I did not know about the proxy rules," he said, adding that the bets had been voided and that he had learned his lesson.
FanDuel confirmed it reported the matter to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission and actioned the account consistent with its terms and conditions and state regulations. The MGC has confirmed its staff are reviewing the matter.
The disclosure carries particular weight because FanDuel is a major sponsor of The Ringer podcast network, which Simmons runs under Spotify.
