Clacton byelection opens as Reform faces first test without Farage on the ballot

Polling has opened in Clacton following Nigel Farage's resignation as MP at the start of July, triggering a byelection the Reform UK leader spent more than £10,000 contesting — against Count Binface among others. The seat Farage personally won in 2024 now tests whether Reform's support is transferable or whether it was always a personality franchise. Farage remains Reform leader but is absent from the ballot. Prediction markets have not yet settled on a clear favourite, and the spread between Reform holding and a Conservative or Labour recovery reflects genuine uncertainty about the party's organisational depth outside its founder's direct presence. The result will be read — rightly or wrongly — as a leading indicator for the 2029 general election and for how much of Reform's 2024 surge was structural versus personal. Thin local polling makes this genuinely difficult to price.
