Almost 500 people have been arrested in France on suspicion of deliberately starting wildfires since the summer began, French authorities confirmed Saturday, as fires burned across Croatia, Germany, Greece and Spain during a record-breaking heatwave.
One person died and 1,200 were evacuated from a Croatian holiday resort after a blaze destroyed homes on Friday. Forty people were injured in that incident alone. Firefighters across half a dozen European countries are currently engaged, with the EU warning that pockets of very extreme wildfire conditions persist continent-wide.
The arson arrest figure is the highest France has recorded in a single season. It shifts the market question from natural disaster liability toward criminal coordination and state response capacity.
