The orca known for ramming boats along the Iberian coast has been spotted carrying what marine conservationists describe as suspected gunshot wounds, raising the probability that a deliberate attack has been carried out against a member of an endangered population.
The animal is one of roughly a dozen individuals in a group that has targeted sailing vessels in the Strait of Gibraltar and surrounding Atlantic waters since 2020. Population count sits below 40. A single confirmed killing event materially shifts extinction trajectory for the subpopulation.
