The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has opened an investigation into FanDuel after the sportsbook accepted bets placed on behalf of sports media personality Bill Simmons by a third party, in what regulators say violated the state's proxy betting rules.
Simmons, a California resident, described the arrangement on his podcast: he allowed his daughter's boyfriend, identified as Hank, to log into his FanDuel account using authentication codes Simmons provided in real time. Simmons said he was unaware the practice broke any rules. FanDuel has since voided the wagers.
The probe marks the first time the Massachusetts Gaming Commission has investigated a licensed operator specifically over proxy betting. The commission's enforcement history to date has focused on prohibited bet categories rather than account-sharing arrangements.
