New York Attorney General sues Polymarket over sports contracts

Heath Quinn Junior Markets Analyst ·2 sources

New York Attorney General Letitia James filed suit against Polymarket on Thursday, alleging the platform's event contracts on sporting events violate state gambling law.

The complaint targets contracts offered through Polymarket's mobile app, which launched in December 2025, and cites the company's advertising practices directed at New York residents. State officials reserved the right to seek a block on platform access for New York users.

The filing frames Polymarket's products as "quintessentially wagering" conducted under the cover of prediction market terminology. It is the third such action New York state has brought against a prediction market operator, following suits against Coinbase and Gemini in April and Kalshi in July.

CFTC Chair Michael Selig has maintained that the federal agency holds exclusive jurisdiction over these platforms. New Jersey has already petitioned the Supreme Court to hear its own case against Kalshi, which would force a ruling on that jurisdictional question. The Supreme Court has not yet decided whether to accept.

Polymarket separately faces a CFTC fraud inquiry opened after the platform's CEO alerted the agency to irregular activity. The New York suit adds state enforcement pressure on top of that federal scrutiny.
