Round Hill Music filed two copyright lawsuits on 17 August against AI companies Suno and Anthropic, alleging both firms used more than 500 of its songs without authorisation to train their models. The company says damages could exceed one billion dollars and has indicated it intends to take both cases to trial.
The songs named in the filings include "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls, "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler, and "I Got You (I Feel Good)" by James Brown. Round Hill says both cases may later expand to thousands of additional songs.
Suno has previously been sued by Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music Entertainment. Warner reached a settlement with Suno in November 2025 to license its catalog. Round Hill CEO Josh Gruss said his company would not accept a similar resolution that left artists without compensation.
Anthropic, which makes the Claude model, has faced copyright litigation across multiple industries. Both companies argue that training on existing works constitutes fair use. Courts have not resolved that question.
