An unfamiliar financial product normally needs a sales pitch. A default can arrive before the pitch. It becomes the starting point from which a business must make an affirmative decision to move elsewhere.
Stripe's September announcement names OUSD on Tempo as its default stablecoin configuration. It also says alternative stablecoins and chains remain available and existing balances will not have to be converted. This is a strong distribution position, but it is not a declaration that every Stripe payment now uses OUSD. 1
That narrower description is enough to be interesting. The advantage lies in reduced decision friction: a developer can begin with the provider's chosen configuration instead of separately researching an asset and a network.
A recommendation has consequences
Defaults can reduce complexity. They can also concentrate the consequences of an assumption. When a platform makes an asset easy to adopt, it should make the liabilities, exit route and alternatives equally understandable. Convenience does not resolve suitability.
For a business, the meaningful comparison is broader than the token transfer fee. Does its recipient accept the asset? Can its finance team account for the balance? Is there adequate support? Can it move funds elsewhere without rebuilding its product? A cheaper transfer is only one entry on that list.
The commercial incentive is easy to identify in general terms. A platform that helps distribute a shared asset can deepen the use of its surrounding services. That does not establish an undisclosed fee or an exclusive arrangement. It is an explanation of why distribution and infrastructure can reinforce each other.
Choice after adoption
The test of flexibility comes after integration. An alternative on a product page is less meaningful if moving to it requires changing wallets, recipient onboarding, accounting logic and liquidity arrangements. Those switching costs must be measured in a specific implementation; I cannot assign them a universal figure.
A buyer should ask for a migration plan alongside the launch plan. What data is exportable? Which identifiers are portable? What happens to pending transactions? Who supports the exit? These are useful questions even when the default works well.
I would watch OUSD's distribution here more closely than a short-lived trading-volume spike. A durable position inside ordinary business workflows can matter more than a burst of attention. But a default is an opportunity to earn repeat use, not proof that repeat use has been earned.
