Canada's Mark Carney confirms dollar-for-dollar tariff retaliation

Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed Saturday morning that Canada will match new US tariffs dollar-for-dollar from 8 September, after trade talks with Washington collapsed late Friday night.

Carney told Canadians the US had made last-minute demands that were "unfair" and "uneconomic," adding that the country had asked too much and offered too little. He described the situation as a trade war. "You're at war when you're attacked," he said.

The new US tariffs cover approximately $20 billion in Canadian imports — around 5% of total trade — targeting wine, dairy, cement, clothing and hockey equipment. They sit on top of existing duties on Canadian steel, aluminium, automobiles and lumber. Canada's counter-measures, targeting the same categories, will be detailed in coming days.

Canada sends roughly 70% of its exports to the United States. US states most exposed to Canadian counter-tariffs include Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio.

The newsroom covered Canada's initial tariff imposition and the trade minister's warning before talks broke down. Carney's public confirmation of retaliation, with a fixed date and named categories, is the new development.
