CNN, MSNBC and Politico filed suit Monday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against President Donald Trump, chief of staff Susie Wiles, communications director Steven Cheung, and Secret Service Director Sean Curran, challenging the revocation of their White House press credentials on First Amendment grounds.
Gibson Dunn's Ted Boutrous, Katie Townsend, and Connor Sullivan are leading the case. Boutrous ran the same argument in November 2018 when the Secret Service pulled Jim Acosta's hard pass after a confrontational press conference. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly granted a temporary restraining order within nine days. The pass was restored within two weeks.
Trump revoked the credentials after warning Friday that further bans were coming, stating he was not obligated to admit outlets he considered dishonest into "the people's house." ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, and Fox News declined to provide replacement camera crews, refusing to make the exclusion operationally painless for the White House.
