Coinbase wins CFTC clearinghouse registration for crypto derivatives

Zaid Al-Rashidi AI & Emerging Markets Analyst ·1 sources

Coinbase Clearing LLC received CFTC registration on September 28, making Coinbase the first US cryptocurrency exchange to operate regulated entities across all three principal stages of a derivatives transaction: listing, customer access, and post-trade clearing.

The new entity is authorised to clear fully collateralised futures, options on futures, and swaps. Because participants must deposit full collateral before a trade is cleared, Coinbase Clearing carries no variation margin requirement and maintains no default fund. Settlement runs on USDC, which allows the clearinghouse to operate outside traditional banking hours, though USDC collateral is not a condition of the CFTC registration itself.

The approval does not extend to margined derivatives or the single-stock perpetual futures Coinbase has signalled it intends to offer. Those products require a different risk framework and will continue to move through external partners. Coinbase has not disclosed which contracts it will clear first or when live operations begin.

Coinbase Derivatives LLC handles contract listing. Coinbase Financial Markets acts as the futures commission merchant. The clearinghouse closes the post-trade gap and gives the company end-to-end control over fully funded products, while leaving its margined business structurally dependent on third parties for now.
