Egyptian court charges journalist with terrorism

Heath Quinn Junior Markets Analyst ·1 sources

Egyptian authorities charged journalist Mohamed Ashraf with joining a terrorist group on Sunday, days after security forces arrested all six staff members of Matsadaash, an independent fact-checking platform based in Cairo.

Ashraf was interrogated from 10pm to 8am before being charged with spreading false news and membership of a terrorist organisation. He will be held for 15 days pending investigation. The whereabouts of the remaining five journalists — Abdallah Qadri, Mohamed Adel, Islam Barakat, Mohamed Mahmoud and Omar Helal — are unknown.

Egyptian authorities arrested the six journalists over two days, accusing the outlet of operating without a licence and publishing false news on behalf of the Muslim Brotherhood, designated a terrorist organisation by Egypt in 2013. Matsadaash co-founder Abdelrahman Mansour denied any Brotherhood association, calling the arrests "one of the gravest attacks on journalism in Egypt's modern history."

Dozens of journalists staged an open-ended sit-in outside the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate in Cairo, demanding the staff's release. The Syndicate announced an emergency meeting. The Egyptian State Information Service did not respond to requests for comment.
