Tony Gilroy, speaking at the world premiere of his film "Behemoth!" at Alice Tully Hall on Friday, said the merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. under David Ellison's Skydance would "destroy" a "healthy and beautiful business" built over decades. "To destroy the architecture that made it so in the name of venture capital, it's tragic," Gilroy told Variety.
Skydance has set Tuesday, October 6 as the tentative close date for the merger, which will place both studios under a single company bearing the Skydance name.
Gilroy's film, produced by Searchlight Pictures on a $36 million budget and selected as centerpiece of the 64th New York Film Festival, is the kind of mid-budget adult drama he says the merged entity will have little incentive to greenlight. Pedro Pascal stars as a cellist returning to Hollywood film scoring.
