A fire broke out at the Eagle's Nest, the hilltop retreat built for Adolf Hitler in the Bavarian Alps, on the evening of 24 October 2026. Police confirmed one person has been detained in connection with the blaze, though investigators have not established whether the individual was responsible.
The alarm sounded at approximately 21:15 local time at the Kehlsteinhaus, which sits 1,834 metres above sea level in the Berchtesgaden district of southeastern Germany. Efforts to extinguish the fire continued into Saturday morning.
The Eagle's Nest was commissioned by the Nazi Party and completed in 1938. After the war it passed to the State of Bavaria and has operated as a restaurant and tourist site since 1952, receiving hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
