Kalshi weekly volume tops 10 billion dollars despite August dip

Eleanor Ashworth Senior Markets Analyst ·2 sources

Combined volume across Kalshi and Polymarket fell 14.5% in August to $45.33 billion, the first monthly decline in a year, as FIFA World Cup contracts that drove July's record $50.59 billion expired without replacement.

The drop was uneven. Kalshi recorded $37.17 billion for the month, maintaining 85-90% of comparable weekly volume through late August. Polymarket's offshore platform contracted more sharply, with its combined US and global figures reaching $8.16 billion.

Sports contracts remain the engine. They accounted for over 88% of recent Kalshi activity, and NFL preseason markets generated $167.8 million across both platforms in the week ending August 16, with Kalshi handling roughly 79% of that flow.

The platform also posted a structural milestone inside the same month: for the week ending August 30, Kalshi's weekly contract volume crossed $10 billion for the first time, reaching $10.17 billion.

The August pullback reflects a calendar effect, not a demand shift. The World Cup ran June 11 to July 19. No comparable event follows immediately. NFL regular season contracts begin resolving in September, and the volume data from preseason week suggests the replacement catalyst is already forming.
