Shah ran poker games and acted as a sportsbook agent across Morris, Passaic, and Bergen counties for nearly six years, using restaurants as fronts. His cut of the operation produced $900,084 in proceeds. He also accepted poker debts as political contributions, directing players who owed him money to fund his campaign instead.
New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport announced the plea publicly on August 28. Prosecutors have recommended the maximum sentence of ten years.
The operation concealed an estimated $4.79 million in proceeds across the network. Shah was the Finance Insurance councilmember for Prospect Park at the time of the conduct.
