El Reno, Oklahoma has condemned a Bitcoin mining facility operated by Athlon Blockchain Technology LLC after the site leaked between three and 3.8 million gallons of water into the ground during a regional drought, causing city-wide pressure failures that forced schools and public buildings to close.
The source was a damaged private water line connected to an unauthorized fire hydrant Athlon had installed on the property. Because the hydrant was unsanctioned, city crews had no mechanism to monitor it. The leak went undetected until residents reported dry taps.
El Reno issued a 10-day removal notice to the property owner and scheduled an administrative hearing for September 14. Mayor Steve Jensen confirmed the city will bill Athlon for every metered gallon plus response costs. Taxpayers will not bear the expense.
