Rep. Jamie Raskin opens inquiry into 1789 Capital's Polymarket stake

Rep. Jamie Raskin has launched a congressional inquiry into 1789 Capital, the venture firm where Donald Trump Jr. is a partner, following its equity investment in Polymarket at a valuation of approximately $300 million in August 2025.

The probe centers on whether 1789 Capital received regulatory advantages tied to political relationships. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission granted Polymarket full regulatory clearance to operate in the United States on November 25, 2025, three months after the investment was made. Polymarket's valuation has since risen to an estimated $15 billion, a roughly 50x return on 1789 Capital's entry price. The firm's main fund reported returns of approximately 200% as of June 30, 2026, against a peer average of around 21%.

Trump Jr. joined Polymarket's advisory board as part of the deal. The congressional inquiry is examining the sequence of events between the investment, the CFTC clearance, and the valuation surge.

Polymarket is separately reported to be positioning for a public offering that would make it the first major prediction market to list on a public exchange.
