Donald Trump announced a 72-hour suspension of a 50% tariff on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian imports, citing progress toward a bilateral trade agreement. The levy had been scheduled to take effect Wednesday morning.
Trump posted the announcement on Truth Social less than two hours before the deadline, saying the pause was contingent on finalising deal documents. He and Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke twice this week, with negotiators in continuous talks since July.
Outstanding issues include US tariffs on Canadian autos, Canadian provincial bans on American liquor, and American demands for expanded dairy access. Trump also linked a final agreement to the potential revival of the Keystone XL pipeline, which would carry 830,000 barrels per day from Alberta to US refineries.
The existing tariff structure on Canadian steel, aluminium, autos, and lumber remains in place during the pause.
