Trump threatens sweeping economic consequences against Iran's trade partners
President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social in the early hours of Thursday that any country providing financial, logistical, or commercial support to Iran would face what he called "TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences" — framing the move as "economic D-Day" and describing it as the most severe economic operation ever directed at a single country.
The announcement came three days after a 60-day ceasefire between the United States, Israel, and Iran expired without a diplomatic resolution to the conflict that began in late February. Trump named no countries directly but listed the mechanisms he intends to shut down: oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies.
China, the largest buyer of Iranian oil, was not named. The Treasury Department had already sanctioned several Chinese teapot refineries since the start of the conflict. The UAE, a day earlier, announced it was severing all financial and economic ties with Iran following the detection of two Iranian ballistic missiles targeting maritime traffic in the Gulf. Iran's armed forces responded by warning Gulf states against providing any support to US military operations.
