El-Shami died more than a month before his family was informed. The Houthis have not disclosed the cause of death. Seven other OHCHR personnel detained in the same June 2024 sweep remain in custody. A total of 72 UN and NGO workers have been held by the Houthis, who accused them of links to an American-Israeli spy network.
