A US Navy vessel attacked a commercial tanker in the Gulf of Oman after the ship attempted to breach America's naval blockade of Iranian ports, US Central Command said. The strike marks the first American naval attack in the region in approximately one month.
Central Command described the vessel as having actively tried to break through the blockade perimeter before the strike was ordered.
The incident escalates an already volatile corridor through which a significant share of global oil supply transits.
