NVIDIA acquires Hugging Face for $13bn in deal set for EU review

Eleanor Ashworth Senior Markets Analyst ·1 sources

NVIDIA announced Thursday it will acquire Hugging Face for $13 billion, bringing one of the world's largest open-source AI model repositories under the control of the world's largest publicly traded company by market capitalisation.

Hugging Face began as a chat application and pivoted into a platform hosting open-source and open-weight AI models. Its co-founders are French, and roughly half its workforce is based in Paris, which places the acquisition directly in the path of EU competition regulators and AI Act enforcement bodies in Brussels.

The concern for European regulators is structural. Open-source model hosting has functioned as an alternative pathway for European startups and public institutions that lack the capital to compete with Anthropic or OpenAI. If NVIDIA controls that pathway, the competitive dynamic changes in ways the EU AI Act was not written to address cleanly.

NVIDIA has positioned itself as a champion of open-model access, providing models without charge on its own platforms. Whether regulators in Paris and Brussels treat that positioning as a feature or a strategic argument against divestiture requirements will determine how long this deal takes to close.
